A Thriller Is...

A 'thriller' can be many things, however there are a variety of different 'sub' genres within the thriller genre itself, for example psychological thrillers are a big hit at the moment with films such as inception. Other types of thrillers include crime and mystery as well as many others. The main aspects of thrillers include tension, excitement and also suspension. Most thrillers will contain some form of 'cliff hanger' in which there will be a great deal of suspense and tension created to draw in the audience and  sense of uncertainty and excitement will be formed. Not only this but a lot of thrillers tend to keep pieces of key information hidden from the audience for the majority of the film again this is to create a great deal of uncertainty and suspense as well as also preventing typical judgements in the process. Fight scenes and car chases are commonly used with thrillers. The whole point of a thriller is to keep your audience guessing, full of suspense and unknowing throughout, as the plot builds up to the final climax. Thrillers can create a variety of atmospheres for example creepy, dark, violent and tense. Thrillers usually portray a dark storyline with everything with it appearing to be 'dangerous'. They usually take place in everyday situations and places for example cities and airports with characters such as police officers, city workers being prime examples.

Personally i believe that if a thriller incorporates all these features effectively and successfully it has a good chance of becoming successful.
